Tonight we had a potty party to celebrate the completion of Coulson's potty training. I'm sure we'll have some mishaps here and there, and I'll bring a change of pants and underwear everywhere we go for a long time, but he's gotten the hang of things. About a month before Charlie was born, he was really close to being potty trained and we had talked about having a party with a cake when he was all trained. But just cake wasn't good enough for him, he also wanted to blow out candles. So I promised him a cake with candles. But he never got to the point where he was consistently using the bathroom before Charlie was born. And with a new baby in his home, we didn't expect great things from him for a while. And then suddenly, he was using the bathroom consistently and we were ready to celebrate. And he remembered that I promised him a cake with candles.
So tonight we celebrated with my parents and my brother's family. It was also an excuse for me to cook again. Thanks to so many generous friends, family and church people and some meals I prepared and froze, I haven't really cooked since before Charlie was born. I like to cook for visitors because I don't usually get to make a big meal for just Casey and myself. And I can be fancy. For example, we had cream of broccoli soup and I garnished it with some shredded cheese and steamed broccoli florets - when it's just me and Casey, I don't garnish. And we also celebrated Casey's birthday (he turned 28 last week) - we got a Carvel ice cream cake which he must have every year for his birthday.
The highlight of the evening was when Coulson walked in the kitchen and announced that he had "to go pee." Everyone cheered and clapped since they had hoped they would get a demonstration of this new skill that was being celebrated. Coulson loved all the attention and proudly proclaimed "I'm going to squirt all of my pee into the potty!"
